Along with Sekida Tōge pass and Tomikura Tōge pass, this was one of the most important passes connecting the Shinetsu region. During the Edo period, people from the Echigo side would pass over to visit the hot springs in Nozawa Onsen; coming with them were salt and seafood for Iiyama. Now the entire route, connecting Jōetsu City and Iiyama City, is paved.
