With a peak elevation of 1,129 meters, Hishigatake is known as a mountain of the Yakushi Faith; daimyō Uesugi Kenshin from today’s Jōetsu City set an observation post here in the Sengoku era. The peak is slightly off of the main Shin-etsu Trail, but can be accessed from Sugawa Tōge path. The slopes are covered in beech forest; the Sea of Japan can be seen from the summit.
