Located on the slopes of Mt. Nabekura, it was once called Taki no Sawa (waterfall valley). There once was a plan to cut the trees, as well as a ski resort development project; both were canceled, so the forest is in an almost pristine condition. Many of the giant beech trees here are 200 to 300 years old, especially the huge Moritarō, said to be about 400 years old.
